The Dracula in the book is not this. Stoker’s count is an old man with a heavy white moustache, hair growing on his palms, and breath that makes Jonathan Harker feel ill. He gets younger as he feeds, and he is never once described as handsome.

The tall, pale, well dressed aristocrat is a twentieth century invention, built on stage and then in film because the old man did not work in front of an audience. It has been the accepted version for a hundred years now, which is long enough that the invention has quietly replaced the original.

This is the invented one

Because that is the one people actually picture. Hair swept straight back in heavy combed locks rather than the fine flyaway strands that neither print nor read well. A standing collar rising behind the head, a cravat knotted at the throat, and the cape falling from the shoulders.

The face is not doing anything dramatic

No roar, no lunge, no arms up. The mouth is barely open and the fangs are just visible at the corners, which is far more unsettling than a snarl because it suggests this is a resting state rather than a performance.

The brow is drawn down and the eyes are set deep and level. Whatever he is looking at, he has already decided about it.

The collar is the silhouette

Standing high and wide behind the head, it is what makes the piece read as a vampire from across a room before any detail is visible. It is also the widest part of the sculpture and the part that decides the size of the box.

Left unpainted

Bare bone-white, so the combed hair and the folds of the cravat read as carving. A hand-finished version is coming.

Looking after it

The collar tips are the thinnest parts and the most likely to catch on something. Lift it by the head or the base of the shoulders rather than the collar. Dust with a soft dry brush, which gets into the hair and the folds better than a cloth. Out of direct sun, because PLA softens around 60 degrees.

Change your mind before it is printed and we refund it in full without asking why. After that you still have every right you have under Australian Consumer Law, which we cannot exclude and would not want to.
