Every snake is its own snake
Not a mass of coils with heads stuck on. Each one is modelled separately, with its own body, its own scales, its own head and its own idea about where it is going. Some rise, some turn back, some look out at you over her shoulder.
Walk round the back and it is a knot of them, which is the angle nobody sculpts and the one that shows what this actually took. It is also why this piece costs more than the others: the supports come off a hundred separate undercuts by hand.
The face is calm, and the scales give her away
Level eyes, a straight mouth, classical proportions. The only tell is the fine scaling that begins at the temples, runs down past the ear and onto the throat, so the change is happening to her rather than finished.
The part of the story people have started telling again
In the older tellings she is simply a monster. In Ovid she is a woman who was assaulted in Athena’s temple and then punished for it, and the snakes are the punishment. That version is the reason she has become a tattoo and the reason she is on a lot of shelves at the moment.
We have sculpted her as the person rather than the monster, and left the rest to whoever owns her.
Left unpainted
Bare bone-white, which is how the classical busts she descends from were displayed, and which is what lets the snakes read as form rather than as pattern. A hand-washed version that pushes dark down between the coils is coming.
Where she goes
A hall table, a bookshelf, a bathroom with dark tiles, any room that would take a classical bust and would prefer one that is not a Roman senator. She suits gold, brass and black.
The numbers
- Printed and finished by hand in Australia. Nothing cast.
- WEIRDO 008. That number belongs to this design and will never be given to another.
- Height to be confirmed.
Looking after it
The snake heads at the outside edges are the fragile part and they stand proud on every side, so lift her by the neck or the shoulders and never by the hair. Dust with a soft dry brush or a puff of air rather than a cloth, which will catch. Out of direct sun, because PLA softens around 60 degrees.
Ordering one now
Made to order. Order it and yours goes into the next batch, usually within a fortnight, and you are emailed when it goes on the bed and again when it ships.
Change your mind before it is printed and we refund it in full without asking why. After that you still have every right you have under Australian Consumer Law, which we cannot exclude and would not want to.
