Fluted Vase, Sculptural Table Vase

KEEPER 001 is a vase that does its work in the shadow between the ribs.

Three hundred and thirty millimetres of flute

It starts narrow at the foot, swells to 220 mm across the belly, then pulls back in to a 130 mm neck. The flutes run the whole way and twist as they climb, so they open across the widest part and crowd back together at the top.

That is what makes it read as taller than it is. Your eye follows the lines in, and the object keeps going after the lines have finished.

The light does the decorating

Every flute is a ridge and a valley, which means every one of them has a lit side and a dark side. Move a lamp, or let the afternoon move on its own, and the whole surface reorganises. A smooth vase in this colour would be a smooth vase. This one is never quite the same twice.

Dried stems, not water

This is a vase for dried flowers, pampas, eucalyptus and good fake stems. A printed vase is not watertight, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling you a slow leak onto your furniture.

If you want fresh flowers in it, stand a glass test tube or a small jar inside and change that. It holds the arrangement and the vase stays dry.

The flowers in the photographs are not included. They are there for scale, because 330 mm is bigger than most people picture.

Where it goes

Mantel, hall table, sideboard, or the corner beside the television that has never quite worked. It is a sculptural vase first and a container second, and it is perfectly happy standing empty.

Looking after it

Out of direct sun, because PLA softens around 60 degrees and a tall thin-walled vase is exactly the shape that shows it. Dust along the flutes with a soft dry brush. Do not put it in a dishwasher and do not fill it with water.

How it is made

Modelled from scratch, printed here on our own machines, then cleaned up, finished and packed by hand. Nothing is outsourced and nothing is cast, so every piece carries faint layer lines and no two come out quite identical. We could sand those out. We would rather you could see it was made than see it was manufactured.

PLA, which is a corn-starch derived plastic. It is rigid, it holds fine detail better than almost anything else at this price, and it has one weakness worth knowing: it softens at around 60 degrees. A sunny windowsill in February is the one place it should never live.

Everything here is made to order. Nothing sits in a box waiting, which is why you are not paying for a warehouse. Order it and yours goes into the next batch, usually within a fortnight, and you are emailed when it goes on the bed and again when it ships.

Change your mind before it is printed and we refund it in full without asking why. After that you still have every right you have under Australian Consumer Law, which we cannot exclude and would not want to.
