The jaw clears the box by a long way

The head comes forward out of the black box far enough that the snout and the front teeth hang entirely in open air, with nothing behind them. From the side it reads as an animal caught mid lunge. From the front you get the whole open mouth, the tongue and both rows of teeth pointed at you.

That overhang is the reason this one stops people. Most printed dinosaurs sit politely inside their base. This one does not fit in its own box. It stands between the books at about the width of a hardback, and then refuses to stay there.

Skin, not bone

This is the living animal rather than the museum version. Pebbled hide across the snout, folds behind the jaw, a hard brow ridge above the eye, and scale texture that changes as it runs back over the skull. Every tooth is separate and tapered.

It is not alone in there

Two smaller heads sit low in the box beneath it, watching the room while the big one does the shouting. You do not notice them straight away, which is exactly the point, and it is why the piece survives being looked at twice.

White against black, which is why you can see any of it

The animal prints in bone white and the box is flat matte black, so every edge of the sculpture is drawn against its own background instead of dissolving into the bookcase behind it. A museum lays a specimen on dark cloth for the same reason.

Where it belongs

A child’s room that has grown out of cartoons. A study. A shelf of natural history books that deserved better than a plain metal L. It is the dinosaur object adults will happily let stay in the lounge room.

Looking after it

The teeth and the front of the jaw carry no support under them, so lift it by the frame and never by the snout. Dust around the mouth with a soft dry brush rather than a cloth. Out of direct sun, because PLA softens around 60 degrees.

How it is made

Modelled from scratch, printed here on our own machines, then cleaned up, finished and packed by hand. Nothing is outsourced and nothing is cast, so every piece carries faint layer lines and no two come out quite identical. We could sand those out. We would rather you could see it was made than see it was manufactured.

PLA, which is a corn-starch derived plastic. It is rigid, it holds fine detail better than almost anything else at this price, and it has one weakness worth knowing: it softens at around 60 degrees. A sunny windowsill in February is the one place it should never live.

Ordering one now

Everything here is made to order. Nothing sits in a box waiting, which is why you are not paying for a warehouse. Order it and yours goes into the next batch, usually within a fortnight, and you are emailed when it goes on the bed and again when it ships.

Change your mind before it is printed and we refund it in full without asking why. After that you still have every right you have under Australian Consumer Law, which we cannot exclude and would not want to.
